British wheelchair manufacturer expands export operations across the pond with new USA distributor
Cheshire-based all-terrain wheelchair manufacturer The Mountain Trike Company has recently secured an additional distributor in the USA, covering the expansive Southeastern region of the country.
Headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee and established in 1981, Pioneer Medical Inc. will now be the customer point of contact and handle all direct sales covering the states of Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
The US company will now distribute all Mountain Trike products, including the flagship Mountain Trike, the MT Push and MT Evo, as well as the new eTrike which the British manufacturer launched at 2019’s Naidex.
Joshua Smith, Owner of Pioneer Medical, commented: “We specialise in rentals and sales in respiratory, wound care, and rehab products and are working toward bridging healthcare with the outdoor industry through technology and service.
“Pioneer believes these two industries share much in common, and together, encourage positive lifestyles translating to “Preventive Health Care” in body, mind, and spirit. The Mountain Trike Company makes products which demonstrate the overlap of these two industries and there isn’t anything that is as diverse or all-terrain capable available in the US. So, it is an excellent fit for Pioneer to become a distributor of these innovative and unique products.”
The new Mountain Trike distributor will now focus particular attention on developing national Veteran and Government opportunities, with the Pioneer itself being a veteran-owned small business and having worked directly with the Veterans Administration for nearly two decades.
“The Mountain Trike is an excellent tool which literally allows the user to overcome obstacles blocking many activities – thereby promoting accessibility, independence, and freedom,” continued Joshua.
“These products match Pioneer Medical’s ethos, and I’m delighted that Pioneer Medical is now a distributor of these innovative products. One might say we are exploring “Outside” the realm of traditional US healthcare pursuing the goal of making the Mountain Trike available to everyone who needs it.”
Developed by the Mountain Trike Company’s founder and Managing Director Tim Morgan whilst in his final year of study at the University of Bath, the Mountain Trike first entered the market in 2011 and since then, has gone on to see both the product portfolio and sales increase.
Discussing the new US distributor, Tim said: “As with any business, growing sales is key to success and being a small business, I am always looking for new distributors who fit our company ethos to help grow our sales and expand our customer base. When Joshua from Pioneer Medical got in touch, I could see they would be a good match for our products.
The company currently distributes and sells direct to customers worldwide from their UK base and through a number of distributors worldwide.
“We already have a couple of distributors in the US, but as America is a very large country – with Pioneer Medical as a distributor covering specific states it will hopefully mean that more US customers will have the chance to see our all-terrain wheelchair products and have a dedicated knowledgeable team in their area,” continued Tim.

Pioneer Medical now has a Mountain Trike lever drive all-terrain wheelchair available as a demonstration model for customers to try.
Featuring many components found in a mountain bike, the design’s unique lever drive system means the users’ hands stay clean and dry. In March 2019, the company added the eTrike to its product range, offering flexible riding by twisting the throttle which activates the electric power assist.
