Sustained growth in global sales has helped British stairlift manufacturer Acorn Stairlifts win the Export Award at the 2024 Insider Made in Yorkshire Awards.

Founded in 1992, the Yorkshire-based business now exports its British-made stairlifts to more than 80 countries worldwide, with branches and distribution networks established on four continents. Acorn’s latest set of annual results show that 72.5 per cent of its annual turnover is now generated by overseas trade, amounting to just under £178 million.

These results helped Acorn win the Export Award at this year’s Made in Yorkshire Awards, organised by national business-to-business media company Insider. The judges commended “Acorn’s continued export growth and agility in responding to supply chain issues, as well as its market-leading position in North America – a rare achievement for a UK-based manufacturer”.

Held at the Royal Armouries complex in Leeds, the awards event celebrated world-class companies based in Yorkshire and the Humber, with awards presented in a wide range of categories. Acorn was also shortlisted for the Medical, Life Sciences and Healthcare Award and the Manufacturer of the Year (over £25m) Award.

Commenting on the company’s success, Nick Wilson, UK and Europe Operations Director for Acorn Stairlifts, commented: “Acorn is very proud of its Yorkshire roots and the global business we’ve built here, so we naturally take great pride in winning the Made in Yorkshire Export Award.”

Founded in Bradford in 1992, Acorn has two factories in West Yorkshire and another in Scotland as well as operating wholly-owned subsidiaries in the USA and Canada, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

In May 2023, Acorn Stairlifts announced that its first fully electric-powered van was in operation in the Isle of Man, with plans to switch more of its delivery and service vans to create an ‘all green’ fleet.
