Mobility scooter manufacturer Kymco UK has been manufacturing mobility scooters for over 20 years. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the firm has continued to grow over the last couple of years, with the continued development of new products, new members of staff and plenty more surprises… THIIS caught up with Thomas Bradford, Marketing Coordinator for Kymco UK

What have been the highlights for Kymco over the past 12 months?

TB: “Kymco have had a progressive 12 months, with the world starting to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We managed to maintain good levels of product stock to support our dealer network, which is something Kymco UK have always been committed.  Due to our substantial investment in stockholding, we were able to sustain supply for our dealers and maintain a strong sales performance, during difficult market conditions.

“Demand for our products during this time ramped up dramatically, partly since we had good stock levels.  We took extra market share from our competitors at this time as some other companies were of course less fortunate with their stock position.  The unprecedented demand did create some pressure for restocking of some of our most popular models, which did go out of stock for a while due to the pandemic.

“We launched the new K-lite FE and K-lite F at Naidex last year and it has proven to be a massive success, surpassing all our expectations. We have also managed to grow the team significantly, with new appointments to our Sales, Marketing, Customer Service and Technical Teams.

“These new appointments have led Kymco on a new path which has resulted in creative brand expansion, expansions to our dealer network and more continuous improvements to customer satisfaction levels.

“Kymco have also been ramping up its brand development and marketing activities continuing its dominant valued partnership with Naidex, investment in Rehacare Dusseldorf 2022, improving its in-store point-of-sale materials and launched a new website at the start of the year, as well as a media share portal, dealer zone and establishing a network of QR codes.”

Can you tell us a bit more about the upgraded Premium Maxer Mobility Scooter?

TB: “The new Maxer ER is a further development of our ever popular, leading premium mobility scooter.

“Due to our customers’ ever-increasing appetite for more range and durability, we responded and packed a bit more into this amazing scooter, getting as much range capability in the scooter as possible.

“With Maxer ER, we’ve managed to fit 2 x 100 Ah batteries in the scooter by redevelopment of the heavy-duty chassis and an improved motor performance.

“With this new beefed-up model Maxer ER can now achieve an extra 10 miles drive range, meaning it can achieve a massive 45 miles range, with one charge.”

Last year, Kymco launched its first ever range of folding scooter. What kind of response have you had to this range so far?

“This little scooter has been a fantastic seller for Kymco and our dealers and is a product we are incredibly proud of.

How has your firm navigated the impacts from external factors such as Brexit and the Covid 19 pandemic over the past couple of years?

TB: “The last few years have been the hardest and most adverse conditions experienced by the industry, and we have had to deal with may difficult issues that have resulted from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit.

“Whilst we’ve managed to maintain a good level of stock of our products, massively rising shipping costs, fuel costs, energy costs and severe delays have been some of the main issues we have faced and are still facing, for both main product and spare parts.

“Whilst these are mainly out of our control, we are continuing to make every effort to minimalize the effect of these issues, so we can continue to support our dealer network and our customers.”

Is Kymco seeking to expand its dealer network?

TB: “As mentioned earlier, Kymco is dedicated to expanding its dealer network in all areas of the UK, to support its customers to the very highest level.

“We are always interested in hearing from potential dealers who want to join our dealer network. The best contact to start talks with joining is with Neil Keeble  nkeeble@kymcouk.co.uk.”

What’s coming up for Kymco over the rest of the year?

TB: “Kymco still have a very busy remainder of 2022. We have Naidex coming up on the 6th – 7th of July, of which we are proud sponsors and will have a fantastic stand to visit at the very front of the show.

“We will also be attending and exhibiting at the Motability “One Big Day’ events at various locations across the UK this summer.

“We are also attending for the first time ever, The Royal Welsh Show on the 18th – 21st of July, which is an incredible opportunity for us to showcase our flagship products, as well as further expand our brand.

“To wrap up on the year’s events we will be at Rehacare Dusseldorf on the 14th – 17th of September, to further expand our European and International business.  Outside of these events, we will continue our investment and dedication to other marketing activities, dealer support and expansion, and external partnerships, as well as launching new products such as the Maxer ER premium mobility scooter, as well as some other surprises along the way.”
