Suppliers’ OT-delivered CPD seminars steal the show at Kidz to Adultz South
At this year’s Kidz to Adultz South exhibition, a number of suppliers successfully engaged with healthcare professionals by working in conjunction with occupational therapists to deliver high-quality, CPD-accredited seminars.
Abacus Specialist Bathroom Solutions partnered with well-known OT Kate Sheehan to present its latest CPD assisted bathing seminar, Etac R82’s OT and Etac Education Manager Jo McConnell ran an impressive CPD postural seating seminar, and Theraposture’s OT and Trusted Assessor Shaun Masters successfully delivered the first-ever CPD care cot seminar.
Providing Etac R82, Abacus and Theraposture with their clinical expertise for products, assessments and service provision, whilst also leveraging their extensive experience, all three suppliers confirmed the OT delivered seminars were well attended by key healthcare professionals keen to learn more about the solutions on-hand.
Abacus CPD session cleans up
With over 30 years of experience, Kate Sheehan, DipCOT OT and founder of the OT Service, presented a seminar entitled: ‘Bathing – a right to play’ which explored “play” as an occupation and considered how legislation and clinical reasoning can be used to support the necessity of a bath.
Content included information and recommendations to assist with product justification when applying for funding or a DFG (Disabled Facilities Grant), with relevant case studies included to link theory with practice.
In addition, Kate interjected engagement throughout the seminar with a Q&A approach, leading several attendees to congratulate her on the content of her presentation which represented a summarised version of the Abacus ‘Lunch and Learn’ and Assisted Bathing Workshops.
The free training sessions for professionals are available across the UK at suitable locations for OTs, Moving and Handling Practitioners and Physiotherapists, confirmed Abacus
Following her seminar, Kate was available on the Abacus stand to provide one-to-one advice regarding individual client needs and demonstrated to many of her peers the benefits of the new Gemini 2000 bath, the largest height adjustable bath on the market with unique dual-lift technology for safe working heights.
A CPD first for care cots
Aimed at assisting healthcare professionals with care cot prescriptions, Shaun Masters, Occupational Therapist and Theraposture Trusted Assessor, delivered the first CPD-accredited educational to be focused on care cots.
Speaking to over 75 OTs in attendance, Shaun’s session entitled: ‘Becoming confident in prescribing cot beds for better sleep hygiene, client care and moving and handling’, explored the many aspects to consider when specifying beds for maximum occupation.
The experienced OT and Trusted Assessor highlighted the difficulties faced with prescribing paediatric sleeping solutions and discussed the wider implications on health and day-to-day function whilst examining people’s nature to care for others.
Topics also featured future proofing for a child’s needs as they develop and how this has an impact on parent and carer capabilities.
In addition, he explained that the cheapest cot is not always the best choice for long-term value and durability, suggesting a fully modular design gives flexibility for future or varying needs, subsequently reducing equipment wastage and maximising budget expenditure, both in the public and private sector.
Other key areas that Shaun illustrated at Kidz South included legislation regarding safe working heights and entrapment risks – both factors that can be misunderstood or overlooked – as well as the importance of selecting cots that fully conform to British Standard BSEN60601-2-52 regarding safe working heights.
Following his presentation, Shaun assisted fellow peers who required specific information for individual client cases.
Feedback from delegates was positive regarding Shaun’s educational content and several expressed an interest in the possibility of further paediatric and adult product training by Theraposture.
