Permobil supports Global Stop Pressure Ulcer Day with upcoming webinar
Mobility manufacturer Permobil is holding a webinar on Global Stop Pressure Ulcer Day, 17th November, to raise awareness regarding impact and strategies for prevention of pressure ulcers in the seated position.
Every year, the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) holds the Stop Pressure Ulcer Day on every 3rd Thursday in November to help raise awareness on pressure ulcers.
Around the globe companies get involved by hosting educational activities on prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers, organising awareness raising events to share information about pressure ulcers, reach out to the local community to inform them about pressure ulcers and overall, make policy makers aware about pressure ulcers. The EPUAP applauds the efforts of events that help introduce the problematic of pressure ulcers to the public, the professionals and our politicians.
Wheelchair users are considered to be at much higher risk for the development of pressure ulcers than the non-disabled population, according to the NHS, pressure ulcers tend to affect people with health conditions that make it difficult to move, especially those confined to lying in a bed or sitting for prolonged periods of time.
In addition, the severity of pressure ulcers is averagely seen much worse in the wheelchair user population. Severe pressure ulcers are known to be difficult and costly to treat and can immobilize individuals for months, which can significantly impact the level of participation and quality of life of the wheelchair user.
The webinar aims to provide a short overview of the classification and aetiology of pressure ulcers, before looking into the current clinical practice guidelines (CPG) and implications for practice, along with discussing the limitations of the current CPG and existing evidence-based knowledge to counter. It is intended for professionals including clinicians and assistive technology providers, as well as wheelchair users and their family or caregivers.
Recently, a new white paper from Permobil found a growing body of evidence that people who use manual wheelchairs benefit from power assist devices across all aspects of their life, and they go far beyond offering physical relief.
