Toyota to deliver inclusive electric mobility solutions for Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics
Toyota, the worldwide mobility partner of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), has unveiled two inclusive mobility products to transport people at the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024.
Accessible People Movers (APMs) and wheelchair e-pullers will be used during the Games to ensure that athletes and their families, staff, volunteers, and spectators can all move around freely, sustainably and safely.
With a belief in ‘mobility for all’. Toyota states that the APM is the latest illustration of this vision. The vehicle is designed to offer last-mile service and transport people with accessibility needs.
During the Games, Toyota will deploy around 250 APMs to support the transportation of athletes, visitors and staff around various facilities, including places where events or competitions are held, and other official sites such as the Athletes Village.
The uses for APM include transporting athletes, organisers, volunteers, and spectators with physical disabilities or with difficulties to walk, including wheelchair users; moving small goods across the Games and emergency relief.
The APM is a battery electric vehicle. It has been designed in Belgium by Toyota Motor Europe and will be produced in Portugal by Toyota Caetano. Vehicle production is set to start in February 2024.
Toyota co-developed the wheelchair e-puller to further its vision of ‘mobility for all’ at the Paralympic Games Paris 2024. The wheelchair e-puller converts a classic mechanical wheelchair into a battery-powered electric mobility solution, giving more freedom of movement to wheelchair users.
The wheelchair e-puller has been developed together with Austrian mobility startup Klaxon. They specialise in creating products that help people with wheelchairs move easily and independently.
The wheelchair e-puller will be made available during Paris 2024. At the Paralympic Village 50 units will be available as shared mobility via the KINTO Mobility App, to be used within the village. To use it, users will need to fit a bracket to their wheelchair.
At the Paralympic Opening Ceremony. At least 150 units will be used by National Paralympic Committees, athletes and staff.
The e-puller’s speed will be limited for the Paralympic Opening Ceremony and when in use in the Paralympic Village. Its average range is 25 km.
During the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024, all Toyota vehicles, including the electrified fleet and advanced mobility solutions will adopt a specially designed visual identity, highlighting the strong partnership between Toyota and the Games.
The unique design will emphasise Toyota’s multi-path strategy, where each of the technologies, present at the Games, will be identifiable through dedicated colours.
