Inventive engineer converts funfair bumper car into 8mph mobility scooter
A Dorset engineer is turning heads with his latest invention – a bumper car that has left the fairground and taken to the streets after being merged with an 8mph mobility scooter.
Portland-based Chris Acock purchased the dodgem from eBay for £31, reports the Dorset Echo, before purchasing an 8mph mobility scooter for £200 and combining the two together.
The 53-year-old engineer then stripped back the bumper car before bolting and wiring the empty body to the second-hand scooter.
“I stripped everything out of the bumper car until I was left with the bare shell then I took the mobility scooter apart,” he told the Dorset Echo.
“I bolted the scooter’s battery to the underside of the dodgem then did the wiring, painting and sorted the lights out.”
The bumper car/mobility scooter hybrid features lights on the front and back, as well as hazard lights. The device also boasts a flag where the tall electric pole would be situated at the back of the car.
According to the local newspaper, the device has a range of 20 miles and has been spotted riding around Portland when Chris and his wife Zarra Lea visit the local shops.
The project cost the quirky engineer a total of £400 and a few weekends to complete.
