World’s largest furniture retailer collaborates with physios to launch range for disabled people
Ikea, the Swedish multinational retailer that designs and sells affordable flatpack furniture and home products, has announced it is to launch a new range aimed at people with disabilities in May 2020.
The world’s largest furniture retailer unveiled the plans for its new collection of functional furniture and aids at its annual Democratic Design Day, with the new collection being called the OMTÄNKSAM range.
Meaning ‘thoughtful’, the range will be made to assist people living with disabilities with different kinds of functional needs to make getting around the house easier and more comfortable, according to the company.
In the pipeline are products for the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen, with designs including anti-slip mats, cushions for seats, comfortable chairs, jar grippers and more.
The company said: “About 15 per cent of the world’s population lives with some form of disability. With the OMTÄNKSAM range – developed in collaboration with ergonomists, physiotherapists and researchers – Ikea is helping people overcome obstacles that make it difficult to enjoy an independent life by adding extra comfort and functionality.
“Ikea’s vision has always been to create a better everyday life for the many people. That includes all individuals with different kinds of functional needs – from children to the elderly and everyone in between.”
Aiming to reach disabled and elderly customers, the Swedish retail giant highlighted that “hardly any other company in the home furnishing business is addressing these issues.”
This is not the first time the furniture giant has turned its attention to the disability sector, having launched its ThisAbles range of add-on products to transform the lives of people with disabilities earlier this year.
The Swedish furniture company also collaborated with wearable device company UNYQ and e-sports specialist Area Academy in spring, showcasing prototypes for a series of home products aiming to enhance the gaming experience for disabled people.
