Glasgow-based wheelchair cushion supplier wheelAIR has confirmed it is to showcase a new product at Rehacare, unveiling its latest offering on September 18th.

The start-up, which was launched by university graduate Corian Steals in 2017, entered the mobility market with its innovative cooling wheelchair backrest designed to help solve the problem of overheating experienced by many wheelchair users.

The device lowers a user’s core temperature by reducing heat and moisture via its inbuilt fan technology, offering more comfort by convection, evaporation and conduction heat loss which is accelerated by a constant flow of air.

By dispersing air evenly across a user’s back, wheelAIR says it helps avoid symptoms caused by overheating and over-sweating while keeping skin dry and clean.

In the past three years, wheelAIR has appeared on Dragons Den, won Scottish Edge, and has seen the device distributed and sold worldwide, as well as the Corian appearing in THIIS’ ‘More About…’ feature, discussing the trials and triumphs of being an entrepreneur in the mobility industry.

Additionally, the company has been championing the topics of microclimate management, temperature control, and the impacts on wellness and healthcare. A recent study carried out with the NHS demonstrated the positive impact of wheelAIR’s cooling system in custom moulded seating.

Initially on the market for slingbacks, wheelAIR now also sells their systems to manufacturers of custom moulded seating. Recently, the cooling cushion supplier began its ‘there’s a change in the air’ teaser campaign ahead of the launch of a new, undisclosed product.

Corien Staels, Managing Director of wheelAIR, commented: “Our mission is to remove the physical, emotional and social complications overheating can cause to wheelchair users. The new product is something which we are incredibly excited to share at Rehacare.

“We have seen first-hand the impacts of wheelAIR on wheelchair user’s lives. This motivates us to continue developing wheelAIR to further address the issue of microclimate management for wheelchair users.”
