Mobility aid recognition schemeTransport for London has launched a new scheme which helps to make travel more accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities and mobility needs.

The Mobility Recognition Scheme enables eligible mobility scooter and powered wheelchair users to travel with greater confidence, knowing their equipment has been assessed for use on London’s transport network.

Accessibility is about removing barriers and creating opportunities for everyone to travel independently. Through partnerships like this, we’re proud to support people in staying connected to their communities, work, family and friends.

Anyone who uses a mobility aid on the bus in London can apply for a Mobility Aid Recognition Card. When the card is applied for, Transport for London will confirm with the user whether the mobility aid meets bus specifications.

If it does a ‘travel mentor’ will visit the user and take them out on the network to ensure they are confident to get on and off buses safely. They will then get a card which is recognised on buses to show that their mobility aid has been approved. Travel mentors can also advise on travelling on the tube and overground.

Those who wish to join the Mobility Aid Recognition Scheme, or wish to find out more, can email travelmentor@tfl.gov.uk or call 020 3054 4361 to book an appointment.
