The Institution of Engineering and Technology, one of the world’s largest engineering institutions, has released a new video featuring British disabled actor David Proud putting a new, gyro-based wheelchair and seating system through its paces.

Launched in the UK in 2019, the AddSeat from Swedish supplier AddMovement AB was developed in 2010 by innovator Marit Sundin, a Paralympic Gold Medallist who was selected as Female Innovator of the Year in Sweden in 2014/15.

Formed of the seat and the Segway base, the AddSeat requires a user to move their centre of gravity forwards and backwards to start and stop the chair, with the device’s glide function making the process intuitive and easy, according to the company.

The powered gyro wheelchair also includes support legs which connect to the inner workings of its Segway base, automatically turning off the Segway when deployed for added safety, whilst a parking feature gives stability when the user transfers from the mobility aid.

Additionally, the seating system component of the AddSeat can also be mounted onto other substructures.

The video, just short of 8-minutes, sees ex-Eastenders actor David, who has spina bifida and uses a wheelchair, test the product in the rain and interview AddSeat’s Chief Engineer Ian Thompson, who led the device’s unique styling and whose experience includes stints at Maserati and Lotus.

Discussing the inspiration behind the product’s design, Ian said: “The X-men wheelchair was obviously one of the things because I wanted it to be two-wheeled and cool but also usability and comfort – you can sit on that seat for hours and still, it doesn’t feel uncomfortable.”

Currently distributed in North America and mainland Europe, the company first unveiled the AddSeat to the UK at this year’s Naidex and confirmed it was searching for dealers to help bring the innovation to the market.
