Glideboard by Buckingham HealthcareDisability equipment supplier Buckingham Healthcare has launched an innovative transfer board to help increase the independence of wheelchair users.

The Glideboard can be used to form a temporary bridge between two surfaces, enabling people with restricted mobility to slide safely from one position to another, for instance, from a wheelchair to a toilet.

Manufactured in the UK, the ultra-lightweight Glideboard weighs 1.2kg and features specially designed curved handles to increase stability and facilitate a wide range of positioning and situations.

According to Buckingham Healthcare the gliding seat helps to reduces effort for the user and carer by more than a third.

Lightweight, strong and stable, as well as being easy to clean, the product can be used on different surfaces and is quick and easy to insert and remove.

This new technology will reduce the risk of falls during transfer, states the supplier, as well as the risk of skin shearing and pressure ulcers.

Occupational therapist Chris Buckingham set up Buckingham Healthcare after being inspired by the people she had helped throughout her career of over 15 years.

Buckingham Healthcare offer a range of disability products that Chris has designed to help disabled people live independently.

Having worked as a specialist posture and mobility therapist after taking an additional qualification in posture mangement for patients with complex disabilities, Chris saw how difficult transferring can be. It often requires lifting, dragging and pulling, she found, which can be risky as it can cause injury to the individual if not done correctly.

After years of thinking about a solution, Chris won an Innovate UK Open competition grant. This enabled Chris to work with experts, including those at the Orthopaedic Research Institute at Bournemouth University, social services therapists at Portsmouth and Wimborne and clinicians at Salisbury Hospital, to devise the Glideboard.
