Tidewave launches “world first” continuous movement system for pressure ulcer prevention
A “transformative” pressure care solution, called Tidewave, which gently and continuously moves the user in harmony with their support surface, is now available in the UK.
Tidewave is a pressure care mattress that automatically turns patients prone to pressure ulcers. According to medtech company Tidewave Medical, the developer of Tidewave, it is the world’s first continuous movement system.
Unlike traditional alternating pressure or turning systems, Tidewave gently and continuously moves the user in harmony with their support surface, according to Tidewave Medical. This rhythmic lateral repositioning relieves pressure without disruption, promoting both prevention and healing, including for high-risk, immobile patients.
The assistive technology significantly reduces the need for moving and handling, which eases pressure on busy care teams. It is also designed to reduce NHS backlogs and support the NHS’ goal of safer, more efficient community-based care.
Tidewave can both prevent and heal pressure ulcers, including complex stage 4 pressure ulcers. The mattress further enhances patient comfort and dignity with quiet, automated operation.
Developed in Norway, the mattress is used in hospitals, neuro rehab, and long-term care settings. The assistive technology is now available to UK care providers via medical equipment supplier Ambre-stone.
Andrew Smith, Complex Equipment Consultant & Director at Ambre-stone, UK representative for Tidewave, says that the product is not just a new product it’s a completely new category. He commented to THIIS: “I was introduced to Tidewave at the Reha-care exhibition four years ago and have been in contact with the manufacturer in Norway ever since.
“Tidewave is already a successful solution in Australia, the Middle East and a number of European countries, with the product proving to be accepted as a revolution to pressure ulcer prevention and care. 2025 is the year to ensure the UK grasps this amazing opportunity.”
