The Care Workers’ Charity has announced the launch of its 2020 Impact Report which gives a comprehensive overview and insight into its journey in supporting social care workers over the past 12 months.

Key achievements outlined in the report include the charity providing COVID-19 Emergency Fund Grants, Crisis Grants and Funeral Grants in support for social workers during a turbulent year.

The charity’s COVID-19 Emergency Grant Fund was launched on 30th March in response to the first lockdown the country encountered. Care workers were struggling financially due to isolating and not being able to work, the charity commented, creating problems both for them and their families, as well as the people they were caring for.

The charity managed to help 2,864 care workers in 2020 who were affected through the pandemic, paying out almost £2m worth of grants. Its most popular grant, according to the report, was the two-week isolation grant, where over £1m was awarded for this particular circumstance.

Approximately 404 Crisis Grants were awarded, with a total value of £285,37. Partners of care workers losing their jobs and being furloughed was one of the reoccurring themes the charity had seen as a reason for applicants applying for a grant as well as applicants being off work due to mental health reasons.

Grants of up to £2,000 to help with funeral costs were offered to 39 applicants, with a total value of £64,945.

The total value of all grants awarded during 2020 was £2.2 million – an increase of 1,150 per cent in grant giving activities in 2020, compared to 2019.

Karolina Gerlich, Executive Director of The Care Workers’ Charity says that the charity has gone from strength to strength in supporting care workers during the turbulent year.

She comments: “We’ve seen many changes; a constantly changing landscape in the social care sector; new staff joining the charity; a wider awareness of the contribution made by social care workers and the development of vaccines to bring new hope to everyone.”
