Engaging with a number of healthcare professionals to advocate the benefits of mobility scooters and underline the importance of scooter safety, TGA Mobility supported East Anglian DriveAbility’s official launch of its larger Thetford driving assessment centre.

The charity East Anglian DriveAbility (EAD) is part of the Driving Mobility network of assessment centres which is supported by the Department for Transport. Boasting centres at Thetford and Colchester, the charity provides professional support and driving assessments to people who need to gain, or retain, the ability to drive following a diagnosis involving impairment or disability.

The opening of extended assessment centre at its Thetford centre attracted high numbers of visitors, particularly healthcare professionals from the NHS and private practice, with attendees keen to see the new facilities at the centre.

In addition, attendees had the opportunity to meet representatives from TGA Mobility who were on hand to provide information and advice regarding mobility scooters, as well as running its established scooter test drive course.

Simulating everyday obstacles such as kerbs, slopes and road crossings, the track allowed visitors to test the travel-friendly and folding TGA Minimo Plus 4 alongside the larger Vita S mobility scooter in a controlled environment.

Alongside the test track, Autochair hoists were demonstrated and visitors on the day were provided expert advice regarding the Highway Code from TGA’s Dom Walbanke.

“The EAD event was excellent as it provided an opportunity for us to explain the benefits of mobility scooter ownership face-to-face with Occupational Therapists. We were able to illustrate how specific Class 2 and 3 products can assist with certain conditions and demonstrate why scooters facilitate enablement in the community,” commented Dom.

“TGA regularly works closely with OTs in terms of WHILL Powerchair, wheelchair powerpack and StrongBack wheelchairs, however, this event demonstrated to professionals how our scooter range is equally as appropriate. Our structured and client-focused assessment process was also discussed which ensures appropriate products are supplied to maximise independence and safety.”

According to TGA, feedback from OTs was overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting how informative the event was regarding scooters, as well as learning more about how these products can provide wellbeing benefits and greater inclusion to their clients.

“Social prescribing is a hot topic currently, where professionals seek to signpost individuals to social groups and activities for better well-being,” added Dom.

“With greater inclusion in the community, many benefit from better health which reduces the strain on the care sector – TGA mobility scooters help to deliver this. Overall, we felt it was a very rewarding day for everyone who attended and wish EAD luck as they expand their services.”
