Selected by Tesco Broadbridge Heath in West Sussex as a potential project to receive a grant, the Horsham Scooter Safety scheme is in the running to receive funding to help broaden its scope to scooter users.

Established in 2018, the Horsham Scooter Safety project helps teach mobility scooter users how to drive more safely and aims to reduce the number of scooter accidents and fatalities. It also helps raise awareness to users on the potential dangers and hazards they may encounter while on their scooter and improves their mobility scooter handling skills.

Additionally, attendees will be taught about mobility scooter law, how to give way to pedestrians, what to do in an emergency, how to cross roads and how to negotiate dropped kerbs and slopes.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been nominated to receive a grant. Shoppers at Tesco are encouraged to vote for which organisation they feel should win the grant up until the end of April 2019.

David Searle, Horsham Scooter Safety Team Leader, told the District Post: “We want to continue the project and possibly widen the area to include more scooter drivers. The Tesco ‘Bags of Help’ cash will help us to do that.”

Each scooter safety session held by Horsham Scooter Safety is free and lasts for two hours; local scooter users are invited to the sessions, regardless of age or experience.

On completing the course, individuals receive a copy of the scheme’s ‘guidelines for safety’ and a certificate of attendance.

Scooter safety initiatives are becoming more and more popular, as the number of mobility scooter accidents continue to rise.

Recently, Nottingham Trent University launched an innovative online mobility scooter training tool for users called See & Scoot. Using footage from people on mobility scooter users, the tool incorporates and evidence-based approach to highlight the common difficulties scooter users face in their everyday lives.
