Sumed Yathan Second Skin

Medical equipment specialists Sumed International has launched a medical device which helps to protect elderly or fragile atrophic skin and prevent painful pressure ulcers forming on the heels of people who have limited mobility.

Sumed Yathan Second Skin Heel Sleeve can be used in home care, nursing homes/hospitals and clinics for the fixation of non-adhesive wound dressings and can help prevent skin degradation and pressure points. It can also help in the treatment of pressure ulcers.

According to the manufacturer, a clinical study was successfully carried out on patients with a medium to very high risk of developing a pressure ulcer over 18 months. Five patients from the mixed aged group had nine pressure ulcers in category 1 and 3 at the start of the trial and all wounds completely healed during the application of the product.

Graham Collyer, Executive Chairman at Sumed International UK, commented: “Heel ulcers are the second most common area for pressure ulcers and this novel product will be very useful in patients, particularly those who need limited ambulation.”

The lightweight product has been found to have a number of benefits, including helping to redistribute pressure and provide good airflow to the foot, keeping it cool. The patient is also able to wash and disinfect the foot as normal.

Sumed International manufacture, supply, and distribute a range of medical equipment and supplies such as beds, mattresses, cushions, and heel products. Its focus, it says, is to provide solutions to the pain and discomfort caused by pressure ulcers on the skin of people who have limited mobility.
