Stannah Stairlifts New Designers Award

Stannah, one of the UK’s leading stairlift manufacturers, has continued its Victorian founder’s ethos of supporting engineering education with its sponsorship of the Joseph Stannah Award for a second consecutive year at the New Designers Exhibition.

Taking place on the 3rd to the 6th of July in London, the New Designers event brings together designers, inventors and creatives from across multiple disciples to showcase 3,000 creative unseen ideas, products and trends to design educators, professionals, buyers and consumers.

According to Stannah, Joseph Stannah, who founded the lift company in 1867, was a great supporter of education in engineering, motivating the company’s decision to sponsor the Joseph Stannah Award at the exhibition and help develop the next wave of product designers.

The award aims to celebrate and reward rising talent who are creating products that promote independent living and address real-life problems after the company was inspired by student Jake Paisley dementia home support system design in 2017.

Jake later went on to become a full-time employee at Stannah as a product designer.

In 2018, the first award was received by Josh King for his leading-edge device, Ally. Runner up that same year, Emily Knott, completed a six-week paid placement with Stannah based in the design office after exhibiting her device, ROMA.

This year’s Joseph Stannah Award winner will be presented with £1,000 to support the development of the individual or team’s design career, alongside an opportunity to gain industry experience with a six-week paid placement in the Stannah design office.

In particular, the winning design must demonstrate excellent visualisation through the use of illustrations, renderings and model making.

Presenting the Joseph Stannah Award on 3rd July 2019, the appointed Stannah judging panel will consist of Andreas Szentistvany, Concepts Design Manager; Max Woodhams, Lead Product Designer; Alex Wilson, Lead Product Designer; Gaynor Childs, Market Insights Manager; and Libby Strutt, PR Executive.

Still a family-run business, the fifth-generation independent stairlift manufacturer and supplier has evolved to a global mobility brand that has supplied over 700,000 stairlifts to date, with a turnover in excess of £210million.
