Staff and volunteers rally to raise money for accessible horse riding centre
A fundraising ‘trap push’ along the old railway line from Keswick to Threlkeld and back will take place on 27 October, as Calvert Stables staff and volunteers rally to raise money for a new ‘ride and drive’ horse.
Rescheduled from earlier in the year, the challenge will see Stables Manager Lou Hogan joined by Becky, Rosie, Abbie, and a team of supporters in a collective effort to expand the 12-strong equine team at the much-loved Keswick facility.
A “trap push” refers to pushing a horse-drawn carriage, known as a “trap”, manually along a set route.
Leaving at 10.30am sharp from Keswick Station, the team will take it in turns in pairs to push the 110kg trap along the 10 km route. When not on trap duty, the horse-lovers will be shaking their collection boxes hard to encourage Sunday ramblers to part with their pennies in aid of this very worthy cause. The end goal is to raise £10,000 to fund and welcome the newest stable member sometime in 2026.
Stables Manager, Lou Hogan commented: “This is just the first in a number of events that we have planned over the coming 12 months and we’re very much hoping that local Keswickians and Calvert Stables fans further afield will perhaps consider making a donation online via our website, putting a few pennies in our collection boxes or just join us for a Sunday walk out and lend some moral support!”
Situated on the outskirts of Keswick, Calvert Stables is a British Horse Society and Riding for the Disabled Association-approved riding centre. The dedicated team of six provide accessible riding and trap driving for residential and community riders.
Calvert Stables has launched a Just Giving page to fundraise for the event. Those looking to learn more about the work of Calvert Stables, sponsor a pony online, or volunteer time, can visit the Calvert Stables website.
A charity providing accessible outdoor adventure to thousands of people with disabilities around the UK recently secured an exciting new partnership with an award-winning Keswick tourism operator.
