Middlesbrough Shopmobility has taken delivery of three new mobility scooters to help those with mobility needs get around during the Christmas shopping rush.

The service, which is run by Middlesbrough Environment City, now has a fleet of 12 scooters available for hire from Monday to Saturday for £1 per hour.

Active Travel Administrator Margaret Tonkin told The Northern Echo: “Since we moved to the bus station, demand for the service has continued to grow, so we’re delighted to be able to extend our fleet.

“The scooters are especially popular during the busy Christmas period, and I’m sure our new arrivals will prove a hit with regulars and new users alike.”

Middlesbrough Shopmobility also has eight wheelchairs and two walkers to allow people to get around the town centre independently.
