Explorer Mini by Permobil
The Explorer Mini by Permobil, a powered mobility solution for toddlers with mobility impairments, has been recognized as a TIME Best Invention for 2021.

Bengt Thorsson, Permobil’s President and CEO commented: “We are honoured for the Explorer Mini to be recognized by TIME as a ‘Best Invention of 2021’ and to be included alongside so many other groundbreaking innovations that are improving the lives of individuals around the world.

“The inclusion of the Explorer Mini on this list helps to shine a light on the needs of thousands of very young children with mobility impairments. The Explorer Mini isn’t just about getting these children mobile now, but it’s about laying the foundations for life-long social and cognitive development.”

Permobil developed the first and only powered mobility device for toddlers aged 12-36 months that provides them with on-time mobility experiences, so they can explore and engage with their world in a way that helps them continue their best development.

The manufacturer collaborated with leading experts to design the Explorer Mini and to create a solution for this critical period when mobility and cognitive abilities develop.

Karin Leire, VP Research & Innovation stated: “Finally young children with mobility impairment can play and explore the world independently.

“Each detail on the Explorer Mini has its origin in the needs of the child, combining mobility and postural support to enable reach of developmental milestones.”

Millions of children worldwide are born with motor disabilities such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, or down syndrome and may benefit from the introduction of multimodal mobility options as a part of early intervention.

According to the World Health Organization in 2011, 15.3 per cent of the world’s population has a moderate to severe disability, 93 million of whom are children. This equates to 5.1 per cent of all children ages 0-14 years having a moderate to severe disability.

Each year, TIME seeks out the top 100 products, software, and services that solve some of society’s greatest issues, selecting inventions that change the way we live, work, play, and think about what’s possible.

Last year, the LUCI, an innovative mobility device that enables powerchairs to analyse and safely navigate environments, was named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2020 under the Accessibility category.

A leader in healthcare solutions for power and manual wheelchairs, seating and positioning products, and power assist, Permobil recently strengthened its product portfolio and competitiveness in the market after entering into an agreement to acquire light wheelchair manufacturer, Panthera.
