Permobil’s Tilite division has achieved ISO 13485:2016 certification for its range of made-to-order titanium and aluminium wheelchairs.

To achieve the standard, the mobility manufacturer had to demonstrate its Quality Management Systems were able to provide medical devices that consistently met customer and regulatory requirements.

According to TiLite’s project leader, Brad Wolfe, it took a year and a half to secure the certification.

“We started the process 18 months ago, and every department helped towards achieving this goal,” he explained.

“We have shown that we have robust systems in place for our ultra-lightweight and made-to-measure manual wheelchairs.”

Set by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), ISO standards are internationally recognised across 163 countries worldwide. The body publishes documentation covering a comprehensive range of business and organisational activities which are accepted by all connected countries to support safety, quality and reliability globally.

“This certification is further evidence of our unwavering commitment to quality,” says Anna-Karin Wahlström, Permobil’s director of compliance EU-MDR.

“We chose to pursue it because we hold ourselves to a higher standard. The TiLite unit joins ROHO in having achieved ISO certification.”

The Washington-based Tilite started life manufacturing athletic equipment, such as bike frames, from titanium and moved into the performance wheelchair market in late 1990s. In September 2014, the US manufacturer was acquired by Swedish-based mobility multinational Permobil.

The ISO announcement follows the launch of Permobil’s new M3 Corpus and M5 Corpus powerchairs unveiled in October 2020. The company hopes the new models will help give it the edge in the competitive mid-wheel drive powerchair market.
