Mobility retailers are being encouraged to remind customers about safe mobility scooter use during hot weather, as high temperatures can place additional strain on batteries and increase the risk of unexpected faults.

Mobility specialist Muick Sandy has highlighted that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can reduce battery performance, shorten battery lifespan and, in some cases, leave users unexpectedly stranded.

While modern mobility scooter batteries are designed to operate safely in warm conditions, extreme heat, direct sunlight, long journeys and poor charging habits can all place extra pressure on the battery.

For mobility retailers, the warmer months provide a useful opportunity to give customers practical aftercare advice, particularly those who rely on their scooter daily for independence.

Retailers may wish to remind customers to park their mobility scooter in the shade where possible, avoid leaving it in direct sunlight for long periods, and allow the battery to cool down before putting it on charge after a longer journey.

Customers should also be encouraged to store their scooter in a cool, dry place when not in use, avoid unnecessary long journeys during the hottest part of the day where possible, and keep up with regular servicing so any battery issues can be identified early.

Muick Sandy has also outlined five warning signs that could suggest a mobility scooter battery is overheating or developing a fault.

A battery will naturally become warm during use and charging, but if it feels excessively hot to touch, users should stop using the scooter and allow it to cool before using it again.

An unusual chemical or burning smell coming from the battery compartment should never be ignored. In this situation, users should stop using the scooter immediately and seek professional advice.

Customers should also be alert to a scooter suddenly losing power, a dramatic drop in range, or the scooter cutting out unexpectedly, as excessive heat may be affecting battery performance.

Any swelling, cracking or visible damage to the battery casing could indicate a serious fault. Users should not continue using the scooter until it has been inspected.

Charging issues may also be a warning sign. If the battery struggles to charge, will not reach full capacity, or takes significantly longer than usual, hot weather may have accelerated an underlying problem.

Ben Kenny, Director at Muick Sandy, said: “For many people, a mobility scooter is their independence; losing power unexpectedly can be more than just an inconvenience.

“Most batteries cope perfectly well with normal summer weather, but prolonged exposure to extreme heat can affect their performance. Knowing what warning signs to look out for can help users avoid unnecessary breakdowns and expensive replacements.

“Simple precautions can make a real difference. Parking in the shade, allowing the battery to cool before charging and keeping an eye out for warning signs can all help prolong battery life.

“If something doesn’t seem right, don’t ignore it. Getting a battery checked early is far safer than risking a breakdown when you’re relying on your scooter to get around.”
