Mobility Equipment Training Centre
Plymouth-based Mobility Equipment Training Centre has secured two new contracts to train engineers to install, service and repair a variety of mobility equipment so that they have the necessary skills to work in the mobility sector.

The trainer-approved centre, which opened in 2018, has secured a contract with the Career Transition Partnership, a Ministry of Defence partnership which aims to help ex-service people find a new civilian career or job.

The Mobility Equipment Training Centre (METC) has also been named a preferred supplier for the Department for Work and Pensions, who fund suitable candidates to attend its courses through Jobcentre Plus, a government-funded employment agency which helps working age people find employment in the UK.

Hands-on courses cover the servicing, fault finding, repairs and maintenance of a various mobility items, incorporating mobility scooters, electric wheelchairs, stairlifts and ceiling hoists.

There are continuous tests throughout the course with a final written and practical test. Upon completion an approved certificate will be presented to candidates, for each subject passed.

Steve Whitmore, an army veteran and owner of METC, told THIIS that the firm’s target is to train people from all over the UK in all aspects the mobility industry, giving them the knowledge and skills to be employed or self employed in the mobility sector.

Steve commented: “Since 2018 we have trained many engineers that have either started their own mobility businesses or found new employment within the mobility sector.

“We have also trained many people who already working in the this sector giving them different skills.

“People have travelled to us from as far away as Scotland, Guernsey, Worthing, London, and the Isle of Wight, just to name a few places.”

Although 2020 was a challenging time for the Mobility Equipment Training Centre as the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to close its doors over several months, it has announced more courses for the remainder of this year, as well as for 2022.

As courses fill up at the centre, Steve added that he also intends to recruit and train local people to join his team.
