Millbrook Healthcare launches coronavirus-friendly Surrey Wheelchair Service image

Specialising in the provision of community equipment, wheelchair, and assistive technology services to the NHS and local authorities, Millbrook Healthcare has recently hosted a COVID-19-friendly launch for its new Surrey Wheelchair Service.

Following a competitive tender process in 2019, Millbrook Healthcare was appointed as the new provider of the wheelchair service.

Millbrook Healthcare took over provision of the service from Virgin Healthcare and CSH Surrey on the 30th of June 2020, with the company now providing the wheelchair service for users across Surrey, North East Hampshire and Farnham on behalf of the NHS.

The company worked closely with the three Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in charge of planning and buying wheelchair services for people across Surrey – NHS Surrey Heartlands, NHS North East Hampshire and Farnham, and NHS Surrey Heath – alongside the previous providers to ensure a smooth and disruption-free transition for wheelchair users.

To mark the launch of the new wheelchair service, Paralympian gold medallist Rachel Morris MBE turned out to lend her support to launch the new service, which comes into effect this month.

She was joined by Surrey Downs ICP Deputy Managing Director Lorna Hart and Millbrook Healthcare’s CEO Phil Campling.

Phil said: “It’s an honour to deliver this new, exciting and innovative wheelchair service across Surrey, North East Hants and Farnham, building on the partnership with our colleagues in health and social care and most importantly our service users, their families and carers.”

Key to Millbrook Healthcare’s appointment was a broad range of wheelchair service users and carers from across Surrey and North East Hampshire, who were involved in designing the new service to ensure their needs were central at every stage.

Lorna Hart, Deputy MD of Surrey Downs ICP, commented: “I’m delighted that the new service is now up and running, and we can offer local wheelchair users a brand new, bespoke service, designed by service users, for service users.

“This changeover would not have been possible without a combined and dedicated effort between CCG colleagues, service providers and each and every person who took part in the engagement events which provided invaluable views on what the new service should look like.

“As commissioners of the new service, we are committed to maintaining a high standard of care, and will continue to work with our Wheelchair Steering Group as the new service progresses.”

Millbrook Healthcare added that it is looking forward to working with its health and social care partners to deliver a new, innovative service to users.

In a LinkedIn post about the new service, Annette Cairns, Director of Millbrook Healthcare, said: “We had great attendance either in person or via Zoom and we were lucky to meet some of the fabulous people who worked so hard to commission the new service.

“We are looking forward to working collaboratively with all of our service users and commissioners to deliver a service we are all proud of.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, leading wheelchair services (WCS) providers, including NRS Healthcare, Ross Care, Blatchford, AJM Healthcare, Millbrook Healthcare and Ability Matters, have worked together to ensure wheelchair users’ are being met.
