Specialising in the provision of community equipment, wheelchair, and assistive technology services to the NHS and local authorities, Millbrook Healthcare is piloting a 100 percent electric van in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint.

The van, a Peugeot e-Expert, will begin the pilot in Welwyn Garden City Wheelchair Service (WCS) and will also go to Somerset Community Equipment Service (CES), Surrey CES and Barnet CES to determine the viability at different service centres.

This move reflects the provider’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and this pilot is an important phase of its zero-emission vehicle testing. This will help Millbrook Healthcare decide the future of its 450-van fleet.

Phil Campling, Chief Executive Officer of Millbrook Healthcare, said: “This pilot is an important part of our plan to reduce our carbon footprint, which is in line with our value of socially responsible, ethical and transparent.”

The pilot is the beginning of the company’s journey to understand any challenges with electric vehicles and how it can adapt and put in place solutions for continuous operational efficiency. It will also meet with government policy to ban the sale of new diesel and petrol light commercial vehicles for 2030.

Phil Elkin, Group Procurement Director for Millbrook Healthcare, added: “I’m pleased that we’re able to test the 100% electric van in different locations, to understand their effectiveness for different services and am looking forward to hearing our drivers’ experiences on the use of the electric van.”

In April, Millbrook Healthcare took over the contract for Worcestershire’s Promoting Independent Living Service to deliver the home improvement agency for the six district councils in Worcestershire.

As part of this contract, the provider will be providing minor adaptations and handyperson service aimed at preventing falls at home, which will include installing facilities such as rails, ramps, half steps and fixed toilet frames to make it easier for its customers to move around their homes safely.
