South West based Burnham-on-Sea Hospital has received three new stand aids, with two products from Handicare and one device from Mackworth Healthcare, part of the Prism Medical group.

Costing a total of £3,400, the equipment was donated by charity Burnham-on-Sea War Memorial Hospital in hopes of encouraging patients at the hospital to become more mobile and helping them transfer from chairs to beds.

Bernard Spilsbury, Chairman of The Friends of Burnham-on-Sea Hospital, handed over the equipment to Caroline Dennis, Manager of the Integrated Rehabilitation Team at Burnham-on-Sea War Memorial Hospital, with staff from the hospital.

Amongst the donated equipment was Handicare’s ReTurn 7500i sit-to-stand device, which allows users to stand up from a wheelchair, chair or bed and move a short distance to a destination within a building. It can be used as both a transfer device and a rehabilitation aid.

In addition, the Macworth TA180 sit-to-stand aid was given to the hospital. It encourages more mobile individuals to stand unassisted, but need a little extra help due to reduced leg strength or balance. This device was classified as a priority by the hospital’s therapists as it only had one of the devices before, which was being used daily by more than one patient.

The last piece of equipment is the MiniLift 125 Stand Aid from Handicare. It is designed to replicate the natural action of standing, reducing strain on the user’s body and helping to avoid pain or injury. It is also easy to manoeuvre and store making it a desirable product and the hospital noted it did not previously have a device like it.

Bernard told the Burnham & Highbridge Weekly News: “Although the hospital already has manual handling equipment, it is an old design, is large and not transportable.

“One of the requirements now is for the rehabilitation of the more frail patients so that they are able to go home, the current equipment was never designed to be portable and used both inside the hospital and if necessary in patient’s homes.”
