Highway Energy Services Limited (HESL) has launched an innovative stair safety device, the Stair Guard, which claims to protect the user from suffering fatal or near-fatal injuries because of falling on or down the stairs.

The Stair Guard is designed to ensure the users’ safety when climbing or descending the stairs, helping to save lives and broken bones.

It is a problem which was highlighted in a paper by the NHS on manipulating the appearance of stairs to improve safety. In the UK, approximately 290,000 people are seriously injured and over 500 people die every year due to a fall on steps or stairs.

According to HESL, the Stair Guard has been subjected to the highest level of testing. Its main cable runs the length of the stair guard. It is stainless steel stranded and will carry at least two tonnes.

A number of blocks are anchored to the wall at intervals of approximately 0.7 metres and are manufactured from high tensile structural aluminium which has been fully heat treated.

The product has a lightweight seatbelt device, which is usually fitted by the user around the waist and connected to the main cable.

HESL guarantees that if the user is not entirely satisfied, subject to it being satisfactorily used, HESL will refund and remove the device from the user’s home within the first 30 days and will fix any marks that may have been caused by the installation of the device.
