James Seal winner of Joseph Stannah Award 2019 for colostomy bag

Having sponsored the New Designers exhibition for its second consecutive year with its Joseph Stannah Award, the stairlift giant has awarded the prize to graduate James Seal for his state-of-the-art colostomy bag.

Recently completing his Product Design degree with a first-class honours from the Huddersfield University, James was inspired to develop the new type of colostomy bag after he learnt of a family member’s difficulties living with a stoma.

Keen to improve their quality of life, James’ new ‘Grace’ colostomy bag addresses a number of issues, including the need for a protective seal, the introduction of a revolutionary venting system and a profiled shape for a more comfortable wearing experience.

The end product aims to save users time in their daily routines, reduce complications such as skin problems and leakage, as well as increase their confidence in being able to lead normal lives.

Impressed by his ability to empathise with users, the level of research into the field and his willingness to tackle such a taboo subject, Stannah’s judging panel awarded the second Joseph Stannah award to James, along with £1,000 to support the development of the Grace and a six-week paid placement with the company.

“Having just graduated from university after studying Product Design, I am absolutely delighted that ‘Grace’ has received recognition and won this award,” commented James.

“I am really looking forward to my six-week placement at Stannah, to gain invaluable experience at such a respected and well-known company.”

The stairlift supplier says it is proud to support rising talent who are creating products that promote independent living and address real-life problems.

Held in early July, the New Designers event brought together designers, engineers and inventors in London to showcase thousands of new, innovative products and ideas to interested buyers, educators and consumers.

In June 2019’s ‘The OT’s Perspective,’ Stuart Barrow discussed the rising trend of companies aiming to tackle taboos such as stoma bags with modern and imaginative designs, highlighting a potentially growing market that has traditionally been overlooked by product designers.
