Clare Brophy in UkraineAfter getting her HGV licence and launching a fundraising mission, Handicare President EU/RoW, Clare Brophy, has hit 109 per cent of her target and returned from Eastern Europe after renovating a care home in just four days.

Travelling with charity Yorkshire Aid Convoy, Clare left Yorkshire on 26th March and returned on 3rd April.

Thanks to support from Handicare, Ableworld, Mobility Scotland and TPG DisableAids, a stairlift, new mattresses, bedding, rise and recline chairs, a shower, a bath, and new toilets and sinks were donated.

A new laundry room for the residents to do their washing in was also built, and the care home was decorated by the team of Yorkshire Aid Convoy volunteers.

Raising £5,487 before her trip, Clare is donating the funds directly to the charity.

Clare said: “This trip is something I’ll never forget. Seeing people using zimmer frames or being carried in wheelchairs to get up the stairs was heartbreaking and I’m just so glad that we’ve been able to make what will be a life-changing contribution to the care home residents.

“I set out to raise £5,000 before I left but the support – whether financial, product donations or people just wishing me luck – has been absolutely phenomenal. Exceeding my fundraising target is the cherry on the cake. Yorkshire Aid Convoy is such a powerful charity and I genuinely encourage anyone who can support them in any way to get involved.”

Yorkshire Aid Convoy was founded in 2002 with the objective of collecting, transporting, and distributing humanitarian aid throughout Eastern Europe. It conducts an annual distribution mission, with many organisations in Eastern Europe relying solely on this support to ensure they can continue providing basic healthcare and education services to their communities.

Handicare is a global provider of straight, curved and outdoor stairlifts and has been providing mobility solutions since 1886. It was acquired by Savaria Corporation in 2021, following Savaria’s acquisition of Garaventa Lift, which provides custom-made platform lifts for mobility and accessibility in homes and public locations, in 2018.
