Romsey-based Hampshire Mobility Services is helping to fund a children’s football team as part of a mobility service and maintenance contract it signed with local housing provider Abri.

The retailer, which is based on Church Street, was awarded a service and maintenance contract of stairlifts and other mobility equipment with Abri, one of southern England’s largest housing providers.

Part of the terms of the minimum three-year contract is for Hampshire Mobility Services to financially contribute a percentage of it into a ‘social value fund’ which provides support to local football club Millbrook FC and the work it is doing with grassroots football and community engagement.

Working with the football club, Hampshire Mobility Services identified that supporting Millbrook Munchkins, a foundation group of Millbrook FC would enable the contract criteria to be meet.

So far Hampshire Mobility Services has invested just over £1,000 into the fund which in turn has been paid to the club.

The investment will help cover the costs of equipment, pitch hire and specialised training and provide a viable training environment for young players to enhance their skills.

The group meets on Saturday mornings at Millbrook’s Test Park Sports Facility, and more than 20 children are managed by the group.

It provides free football sessions to children, normally aged three to five years old. The courses are all-inclusive and accommodate kids with differing abilities.

Kevin Fry, Director of Hampshire Mobility Services, said he hopes the new investment will help the local club grow and give the young children somewhere to go, keeping them off the streets.

He commented: “We hope the children and their parents benefit from the funding. In the future, we hope to fund specialised training for children during their school holidays. I wish the children could develop the skills they need and become football stars.”

Mark Puleo, Club Secretary of Millbrook FC, commented: “Millbrook FC would like to thank both Hampshire Mobility Services and Abri for the funding that we receive.

“This is an excellent opportunity to help build solid connections in our community without a cost of a session being a blocker.

“This is the first taste of football for these young children and as a club we hope this continues through their childhood and into adulthood within Millbrook FC. Our aim is not only to coach football but have a positive impact of the progression as a young person/adult.”

A spokesperson for Abri stated: “It’s great to see Millbrook Munchkins receive this funding, helping children in Millbrook engage in football, develop confidence, and help prevent social isolation.”

This is not the first time Hampshire Mobility Services has supported football in the community.

Over the last four years the retailer has sponsored three youth teams, based in the Millbrook area of Southampton with funding helping it to develop a team that now competes in a National Junior Premier League.
