The Disability Unit at the Cabinet Office, a department of the UK Government, has launched a new survey to gather information about what barriers disabled people face to influence future disability policy.

The Cabinet Office is currently developing a National Strategy for Disabled People, with the publication planned for spring 2021. It aims to put fairness at the heart of government work to level up opportunity so everyone can fully participate in life in the UK.

According to the Cabinet Office, the strategy will include existing commitments, such as to increase special educational needs and disability funding and support pupils, whilst identifying further opportunities to improve life for people with disabilities. By publishing the National Strategy for Disabled People, the government hopes to make practical changes to policies that strengthen disabled people’s ability to participate fully in society.

The government wants to further understand the barriers that disabled people face and what it may need to focus upon to improve the lives of disabled people. To help gather this information, the government has launched the UK Disability Survey.

The survey will ask people about their life experiences either as a disabled person, a carer or parent or as someone who has an interest in disability issues.

It comes as many people have had their lives disrupted due to the COVID-19. The Cabinet Office says that alongside usual life experiences, the survey allows people to state whether the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the participant’s life and in what ways.

The survey will be open until 23 April 2021. Responses received before 13 February 2021 will inform the development of the national strategy, while those received after this date used to inform its delivery, the Cabinet Office states.
