AJM staff with the wheelchairsVeterans who attended the 80th anniversary of VJ Day National Commemorative Event last Friday were able to fully and comfortably participate in the day’s ceremony thanks to a fleet of free wheelchairs provided by AJM Choice, the private division of NHS wheelchair provider AJM Healthcare.

The event, at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, Staffordshire, marked 80 years since ‘Victory over Japan’ Day – the end of the Second World War on 15th August 1945.

Supported by the Royal British Legion, the day was a chance to pay tribute to all those who served in the Far East and the Pacific, with the national two-minute silence followed by an hour’s commemoration at the base of the Armed Forces Memorial.

AJM Choice stated that it was another step in a growing programme of activity that aligns its clinical expertise with its social value commitments.AJM Healthcare wheelchairs

As a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, AJM Choice has pledged to ensure those who served are treated with fairness and respect. The company is also working toward the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme to further demonstrate its support for ex-service personnel.

The wheelchairs were provided by AJM’s NHS Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Wheelchair Service centre. A team of volunteers from the wheelchair service centre stayed by veterans’ sides to ensure their comfort and safety during the commemorations, which included a flypast from the Red Arrows and historic aircraft from The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

A spokesperson at AJM Choice said: “Supporting our veterans on this solemn day of remembrance is both a privilege and a responsibility we take to heart. As a proud signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, we’re committed to doing everything we can to honour those who served, and ensuring they have the access, dignity, and support they deserve.”

“We want every veteran to be able to take part in marking this important anniversary. It’s a privilege for us to give back to those who gave so much for our country.”

The company has a long-standing record of contributing to national remembrance events, having supported the VE Day 80 commemorations earlier this year and annually supports the Remembrance Sunday parade at the Cenotaph in London.VJ Day flyover
