Dave Dodswoth Dolphin Mobility Yorkshire & Cumbria

As the coronavirus lockdown continues to put pressure of mobility retailers, Dolphin Mobility Yorkshire and Cumbria has made the decision to invest in a new team member, appointing David Dodsworth to the position of business development manager.

Bringing a wealth of industry knowledge to the York-based access specialists, David’s experience includes spells as the sales manager of stairlift manufacturers MediTek and later Bespoke Stairlifts.

Discussing the appointment, Gareth Watkinson, Managing Director of Dolphin Mobility Yorkshire and Cumbria, commented: “Despite recent disruptions due to COVID-19, we had been experiencing steady growth and it came to the stage we needed a full-time representative in the area to enable us to consolidate existing contracts and increase the private market share.

“I have known David for a number of years when he was a sales manager for stairlift manufactures MediTek and later Bespoke. He has an excellent understanding of the stairlift market and what is required by users and local authorities alike.  This, along with his exceptionally high professional standards and strong work ethic made him the ideal choice and we are grateful he has decided to join us.”

Currently on the main stairlift and hoist suppliers for East Riding of Yorkshire, Allerdale Borough Council, Copeland Borough Council, South Lakeland District, Barrow Borough and Housing, Carlisle City Council and Eden District Council, Dolphin Mobility service customers throughout the North and East Yorkshire and whole of Cumbria area.

“There are a number of reasons I decided to apply for this new role at Dolphin, the location of Yorkshire and Cumbria being one of them. Principally though, I was looking for a new challenge and wanted to work in the dealer and retailer side of the industry,” explained David.

“I first entered the homecare industry in 2014 after many years in financial services, IT and telecoms sales. Initially, as a sales surveyor for MediTek. I liked MediTek, but found it difficult when the then managing director, Kevin Strafford-Price, would not communicate with me and when I brought this to his attention quipped ‘I’ll take that as your resignation then?’ After being approached by Bespoke stairlifts I did just that.”

Newton Aycliffe-based manufacturer MediTek ceased trading in 2018 after running into financial difficulty in the competitive stairlift market.

“Working with stairlift manufacturers meant I was familiar with the Dolphin Mobility group of companies and have always liked and respected their standards and work ethic in that they always look to ensure the right product for the user’s personal circumstances and budgets is the primary focus, because if done properly will ensure best value for money for all is achieved,” added David.

“This new role is perfect for me as it consists of what I like to do best, but also offers some new challenges in looking to grow the public and private sector business and build upon the very strong foundation I have inherited.”

Recently, Dolphin Mobility’s Gareth shared his views regarding whether the stairlift sector needs a registration system to ensure safety, similar to that in the gas industry – see his thoughts here.
