Derby DrivAbility open day
Offering a warm welcome: members of the driving assessment team at Derby DrivAbility.

Derby DrivAbility, part of the Driving Mobility network, is to host a free mobility event on Tuesday 14th June, enabling healthcare professionals to explore specialist equipment for driving, wheelchair loading and passenger safety.

Providing a service within the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust Derby DrivAbility is an accredited Driving Mobility centre.

Its occupational therapists (OTs) and approved driving instructors (ADIs) provide professional assessments to people who need to gain or retain the ability to drive following a diagnosis involving impairment or disability. Service users can self-refer or are referred by the DVLA, Motability, NHS and case managers.

Derby DrivAbility’s Open Day will showcase its services alongside a selection of specialist accessible vehicles and mobility products from experienced and professional suppliers.

Both professional and public visitors will gain valuable knowledge regarding adapted driving and WAVs (wheelchair accessible vehicles) and equipment for travelling safely as a passenger, either for themselves or for clients.

A range of adapted controls and equipment will be on display including left-foot accelerators, steering aids, hand controls, ring accelerators, wheelchair hoists, rotating seats and specialist car seats for children.

A selection of specialist manufacturers will be demonstrating drive-from-wheelchair vehicles, wheelchair accessible vehicles, driving adaptations, car boot hoists and person lifts, and car seats and harnesses for children with additional needs.

There will also be information about hire services for scooters and wheelchairs and cycling with a disability as well as a series of short talks suited to professionals and the general public.

Liz Whiteman, Centre Manager and Lead Clinician, comments: “We welcome everyone with an interest in independent mobility to attend our Open Day. Our friendly team will be on hand to answer all queries regarding driving with a disability and the assistive products on display.

“You will be able to find out about the full range of assessment services we offer and see adapted vehicles, children’s specialist car seats and mobility scooters. Local services such as Cycle Derby and Shopmobility will also be exhibiting.”

The event takes place on Tuesday 14th June, between 11am-5pm at Kingsway, Derby. Best sat nav codes to use are Anmer Drive DE22 3XU or Kingsway Boulevard DE22 3WU. There is free entry and parking for visitors and booking is not required. More information can be found by calling 01332 788300 or emailing dhft.driving@nhs.net.

A registered charity, Driving Mobility is supported by the Department for Transport. It accredits a network of over 20 driving assessment centres covering the whole of the UK. Many with outreach facilities, these centres include independent charities and NHS centres which offer professional information and assessment so disabled and elderly people can gain or retain independence.

Following the successful pilot of its ‘HUBs’ accessible travel information service, Driving Mobility recently announced that it will be continuing this initiative for non-drivers thanks to a share of funding from the UK Government geared towards supporting disabled people.
