LUCI, a smart sensor system for power wheelchairs, has secured a new distribution deal with National Seating & Mobility, a firm with 170 store locations in America.

LUCI, an innovative mobility device that enables powerchairs to analyse and safely navigate environments, as well as provide advanced levels of connectivity and protection, was launched in early 2020.

The smart device, which combines stereovision, infrared, ultrasonic and radar sensors, can be retrofitted to powered wheelchairs to help users avoid collisions and dangerous drop-offs while maintaining personalised driving control.

A cloud-based communications system, used with the MyLUCI portal, enables LUCI to safely and privately communicate such issues as low battery charge or a chair tip-over to a consumer’s network of family and caregivers.

Darren Lowman, NSM’s Chief Supply Chain Officer, said that his firm is excited to bring the product to its customers.

“LUCI’s cutting-edge sensor technology interfaces with the wheelchair control system to not only provide a safer driving experience for existing users, but also open the door to powered mobility for those who may have historically been limited to manual or attendant-controlled systems, ultimately transforming the level of mobility and independence for these users.”

Since its launch last year, LUCI, headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, has received much acclaim; it was named one of TIME Magazine’s ‘Best Inventions of 2020’ under the Accessibility category that same year.

The invention is the brainchild of Grammy-nominated songwriter Barry Dean, LUCI’s Founder and CEO, whose 19-year-old daughter Katherine has cerebral palsy and has used a wheelchair her entire life.

Barry with his brother and Co-Founder Jered said of the new agreement, “NSM’s national, growing footprint and experienced network of ATPs will help bring LUCI’s technology to wheelchair users across the country.”

In December 2020, mobility provider Numotion was the first US partner to sign a distribution deal for LUCI’s smart technology for power wheelchairs.
