Cobham named UK’s most accessible motorway service station

Cobham service station on the M25 has been named the UK’s most accessible motorway service area, according to new research by disability aid retailer Complete Care Shop.
The research assessed major UK motorway service stations out of 100 using publicly available data, with the aim of helping disabled motorists, carers and families make more informed decisions when planning journeys.
Cobham took first place with an overall score of 92/100, with the service area recognised for its registered Changing Places toilet provision, detailed AccessAble guidance, virtual pre-journey access information, and fully accessible fuel, shopping and dining facilities.
Cherwell Valley on the M40 secured second place with a score of 89/100, closely followed by Exeter on the M5 in third place with 88/100.
For disabled people and their families, knowing in advance that suitable facilities will be available can be an important part of journey planning.
Unpredictable roadside facilities can remain a significant hurdle for disabled travellers, with concerns around issues such as steep steps, broken lifts or inadequate facilities potentially adding anxiety before a journey has even begun.
While many motorists are able to stop at motorway services without having to consider accessibility in advance, access to reliable information and appropriate facilities can make a substantial difference to disabled drivers and passengers travelling around the country.
Venessa Hodgson, Managing Director at Complete Care Shop, said: “Planning a journey should be an exciting experience; however, for many disabled drivers and passengers, anxiety over suitable stops along the route can be a real barrier.
“By evaluating and highlighting the UK’s most accessible motorway service stations, our goal is to give travellers the information they need to plan their journey. Whether it’s high-spec Changing Places facilities or straightforward step-free access from the car park to dining areas, knowing where these facilities are available makes all the difference.”
