assistive tech game controller powerchair

An ingenious new assistive technology device is enabling powerchair users to turn their powered mobility devices into game controllers, providing those with disabilities the freedom to enjoy video games.

Created by United States charity AbleGamers alongside assistive technology hackers ATMakers, the Freedom Wing Adapter is able to connect Xbox’s Adaptive Controller to a powered wheelchair’s control system through its 9-pin port.

This allows the controls of a powerchair to perform a dual function and double up as an Xbox game controller.

The adapter enables those with limited dexterity and motor disabilities to be able to engage and enjoy video games by using the powerchair controls and buttons that they use in their everyday lives.

Xbox debuted its Adaptive Controller in 2018 in a bid to improve accessibility for those with disabilities, which now retails at £74.99 in the UK.

A key feature of Microsoft’s adaptive controller design was the incorporation of more than a dozen jacks, enabling it to be connected to a wide range of joysticks and buttons, enabling someone with complex mobility needs to have a modified setup to fit their needs.

According to ATMakers, the design to create the adapter will be open source and freely available, enabling anyone with some basic electronic engineering knowledge and access to a 3D printer to create their own DIY device for around £27 all in.

The inexpensive and innovative piece of assistive tech has been hailed as the first device to enable a powerchair control system to be used as a games controller.
