A collection of inspirational short stories by disabled authors dreaming of a world of unlimited mobility could provide popular content for mobility companies to share across their social media channels with their end-users.

The ‘Going Further: Imagining the Futures of Mobility’ collection features three short and powerful works of fiction set in the not too distant future where advances in mobility devices have transformed the lives of those with lower-limb paralysis.

Created by John Wiswell, Brianna Albers and Penny Pepper – all authors from the disability community – and illustrated by renowned British illustrator Ciara Chapman, the stories were commissioned by the Toyota Mobility Foundation’s Mobility Unlimited Challenge.

The three writers were tasked with taking inspiration the innovation mobility aids that have reached the final of Toyota’s worldwide competition and applying their creativity to dream up a world where mobility is no longer a challenge for people with lower limb disabilities.

The Velocity of Freefall by Brianna Albers follows wheelchair user Blaire, accompanied by her partner Jacen, as she overcomes her fears of flying and fully realises her dream of travelling across the world – all from the comfort of her own wheelchair.

John Wiswell’s Let Me Show You Something tells the story of Carter who, with the help of his partner Zia and an innovative exoskeleton, reclaims the wilderness for himself following the accident that left him paralysed.

Lastly, Penny Pepper’s time travel future fiction tale: Skye Finds Her Magic, sees young Skye and her father journey in a marvellous imagined future where the assistive technology available to members of the disability community means the world is full of new possibilities.

During a time when everyone’s ability to travel has been severely restricted, these stories are particularly pertinent and will leave a lasting impression on audiences.

Each intriguing short story is available to read, download and share online for free.

About the Mobility Unlimited Challenge

Launched in partnership with Nesta Challenges in 2017, Toyota’s $4 million global mobility competition has seen innovators and inventors create concepts for new personal mobility devices that could change mobility for millions worldwide.

In January 2019, five innovations were selected to proceed to the finals, each being awarded $500,000 Finalist Grants to develop their prototypes. In 2021, the winning device will be announced, winning the $1million Winner’s Award.
