Charity helps tackle misunderstandings that stop people from putting Power of Attorney in place
The Dementia Trust is calling on people in Scotland to act early and protect their loved ones as it launches a new national ‘Planning Ahead’ campaign, highlighting that fewer than one in ten adults in Scotland currently has a Power of Attorney in place.
The movement is fronted by Sandra McDonald, former Public Guardian for Scotland and Chair Emeritus of The Dementia Trust, and supported by local solicitors. It aims to tackle the misunderstandings that stop people from putting Power of Attorney in place and encourages conversations to be normalised in the same way families discuss wills or pensions.
Sandra said: “Every week, I hear from families who want to do the right thing, but find themselves locked out of decisions about their loved one’s care, finances or discharge from hospital. Many people are surprised to learn that even a spouse or adult child can’t automatically step in to make decisions unless a Power of Attorney has been granted.
“These situations are heartbreaking and avoidable if you have the right protections in place. There is a wider impact too, as hospital delays and lengthy guardianship applications add strain on Scotland’s health and social care system.
“The upcoming festive season is often when families first notice changes in a loved one’s memory or confidence. I would urge everyone to have open conversations about Power of Attorney before a crisis hits. It’s about protecting the people you love.”
The Planning Ahead campaign will run initially as a pilot in Edinburgh, supported by local solicitors and dementia experts. A new online hub provides practical resources and guidance for both legal professionals and families, making it easier to start conversations and access support. Participating law firms will take part in a dedicated ‘POA Month’ in February 2026, pledging to raise awareness among clients and donate 10 per cent of Power of Attorney income to The Dementia Trust.
