Queen's Award 2020 applications

Described as “the most prestigious awards for UK businesses” by the government, organisations in the mobility and access sector can now apply for the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise 2021.

Established in November 1965 by way of a royal warrant, the awards programme for British organisations is recognised as the highest official business accolades in the country, providing winners with a valuable platform to promote themselves.

Now, organisations in the mobility, access and independent living sector can participate to have their contributions to enterprise celebrated next year.

Companies can choose from four Queen’s Awards categories to enter: Innovation, International Trade, Sustainable Development, or Promoting Opportunity through Social Mobility. Importantly, companies are free to enter as many categories as applicable to their business.

To be eligible to participate, all applicants must be based in the UK and file Company Tax Returns with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), alongside being a self-contained enterprise that markets its own products or services and is under its own management.

In addition, applying organisations must have at least two full-time UK employees or part-time equivalents, as well as be able to demonstrate strong corporate social responsibility.

There are also further application requirements depending on which category a business enters.

Winners are recommended by the prime minister and approved by Her Majesty the Queen before being presented their awards at ceremonies conducted at the winners’ premises by one of the Queen’s personal representatives, a Lord-Lieutenant.

Additionally, representatives of the winning businesses are invited to a celebratory Royal Reception.

2020 saw 220 winners selected, with mobility industry players Stiltz and Tomcat chosen for the international trade and innovation categories, respectively.

In April, Lachlan Faulkner, Co-Founder and Chief Commercial Officer of Stiltz, said: “I am extremely proud to know that the Prime Minister recommended, and Her Majesty the Queen approved, Stiltz for the International Trade Award; it’s a big deal for us. Along with winning the 2019 Lloyds Bank Exporter of the Year Award late last year, it is testament to the hard work of everyone within the business that we’re gaining recognition for making such rapid progress with our export strategy.”

Now entering their 55th year, the awards are touted as offering a range of benefits to winners, including the ability to fly the Queen’s Award flag at their principal premises and use the logo on goods, advertising and merchandise.

In addition, companies that are unsuccessful still receive feedback on how to improve their entries when applying in the future.

Applications are open until midday on 9 September 2020 and entries are free.
