Ceiling hoist & bath installers no longer required to carry CSCS cards to gain access to building sites
A change to the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) will mean mobility companies fitting ceiling track hoists and baths will no longer need to carry a CSCS card to gain access to building sites.
Previously, individuals from the mobility industry working on a site were required to hold a CSCS Card, providing proof that the installers and fitters working on a construction site had the required training and qualifications to carry out their role safely.
For ceiling hoists and shower/bath installers, however, the card had been difficult to obtain because of no recognised NVQ’s relating to hoist or bath installation, resulting in site managers often being reluctant to grant access due to health & safety concerns.
Recognising that a number of occupations are non-construction related and therefore should not be covered by the scheme, the CSCS announced it will no longer be issuing cards for a number of occupations, including installers of hoists and bath products.
Under the amended scheme, it will now be the responsibility of site managers to induct non-construction related workers and escort them where appropriate to carry out their work safely.
Stating the decision was agreed following discussions with key industry representatives, including CITB and employer representatives, the CSCS says the change will help ensure only those who hold a construction related, nationally recognised qualification are able to obtain its cards.
Confirming that the decision is also fully in line with the Build UK Training Standard, the CSCS advises any workers refused entry to a site by a contractor due to not holding a CSCS card to visit its website for more information.
