To mark Global Accessibility Awareness Day today, Business Disability Forum’s Technology Taskforce has launched several free resources to help increase understanding about the benefits of accessibility.

Fifteen per cent of the world’s population have a disability. Accessibility is about making information, products, and systems usable for disabled people and everyone. Whether writing emails, managing projects, designing products or buying-in tech, we all need to think about accessibility.

Business Disability Forum’s (BDF) free resources provide answers to key accessibility questions, covering topics such as: What is accessibility; who benefits from accessibility; how does accessibility drive innovation; why is diversity important in the workplace; what is brand accessibility; what is inclusive design; how can accessibility improve legal compliance and which accessibility training is right for different organisations?

The resources include ready to use presentations, videos (created with Microlink), and Q&A documents, as well as an online guide to accessibility training. Business Disability Forum hopes the resources will increase understanding and good practice around accessibility.

BDF’s Technology Taskforce is a group of senior tech accessibility individuals, from leading UK and Global organisations, working together, to improve the use of inclusive design and accessible technology.

BDF’s Technology Taskforce Manager, Lucy Ruck, said: “We all have a role to play in making our businesses, workplaces and the world around us more accessible.

“Through these new resources, we want to help more people understand what accessibility is and the benefits it can bring to everyone – not just disabled people. We also want to demystify accessibility for non-tech colleagues who may not know where to start.

“At the end of the day, accessible businesses are more innovative, more inclusive and more productive. They have better brand awareness and better legal compliance, so understanding accessibility makes good sense.

“We would like to thank all our Technology Taskforce Members for their time and help in creating the resources.”

Earlier this year, BDF published a new global guide which discusses how businesses can make their built environments accessible to people with a disability.
