hearing and mobility administration
As seen on the door of its Bournemouth office

Having been acquired by DHAIS plc (now DHAIS ltd) back in 2008 and becoming the springboard for its ambitious national mobility retail strategy, the Hearing and Mobility brand has of now ceased trading with Grant Thornton having been appointed as administrators.

Hearing Health and Mobility, a subsidiary of DHAIS, was a Northampton-based mobility retailer founded in 2000 which had operated five stores in the Midlands before being taken over by DHAIS as the parent company set out to create a wide-scale retail operation centring around hearing healthcare and mobility aids.

Growing exponentially in a short space of time, Hearing and Mobility operated stores across the country before gradually reducing its portfolio to cover primarily the Midlands and the South.

Over the last few recent years, Hearing Health and Mobility began a strategic move away from mobility, citing difficulties achieving operational profitability, shifting its focus to the hearing market instead which DHAIS Chairman Mark Moss said had better profitability and growth prospects.

From 2016 onwards, DHAIS sold and closed a vast number of stores, reducing its portfolio to just four at the start of 2020 following the takeover of its Cardiff store by Snowdrop Independent Living at the end of December 2019.

Now, a letter has been posted on the door of its Bournemouth Hearing and Mobility store informing customers that the branch “has ceased trading until further notice,” with Hearing Health and Mobility appointing “Alistair Wardell and Richard Lewis of Grant Thornton UK were appointed as Joint Administrators” on 22nd January 2020.

The announcement comes after Hearing and Mobility was recently commended in Motability’s annual awards for the large category earlier in the month.

Speaking to a spokesperson from DHAIS, the company confirmed that all of its remaining stores are temporarily shut and all enquiries should be directed to the administrators.

The note on the door finished: “Queries in respect of the Administration should be directed to the above office, quoting reference D20597045.”
