Ben Clarke Batiatric Market new mechanical design engineer

Benmor Medical, a manufacturer and provider of mobility equipment specialising in supporting bariatric care, has responded to growth in the market by expanding its product design capabilities with the addition of talented mechanical design engineer Ben Clarke.

Formed in 1996, Benmor Medical was the first company in the UK to specialise in bariatric patient handling equipment and now offers an extensive range of bariatric equipment, including beds, seating, slings, wheelchairs and standing aids. Additionally, the company provides 24/7 emergency rentals, with branches in Hampshire, Tyne & Wear, Leicestershire and Bristol.

With the design of Benmor Medical’s products having traditionally been controlled by Managing Director Peter Staddon, the company says market growth has enabled it to create a new and exciting engineering design position.

With experience developing mechanical products, Ben will now be responsible for product design, development and key component selection, working alongside sub-contractors to refine the mechanical design of pre-existing medical bed products and managing new product projects.

Awarded the New Holland Trophy after graduating top of his class with a First-Class Honours degree in the field of Agricultural Engineering BEng (Hons) from Harper Adams University in 2016, Ben is an associate member of Institution of Agricultural Engineers is on course to become an Incorporated Engineer.

Having gained substantial experience in developing bespoke machinery during a three-year stint with one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of agricultural machinery, rising to a full Design Engineer (Junior Manager) in a short period of time, he will aim to use his ingenuity to bring new ideas to the medical device sector.

Discussing joining Benmor Medical, Ben commented: “I’ve not had the chance to work in the medical devices sector before and I’m always keen to learn new things and be challenged so the learning curve offered by Benmor Medical was a challenge I couldn’t turn down.

“In the short amount of time I’ve worked for Benmor Medical, I’ve been shown how difficult life can be for the Bariatric patients our products cater for. I’m excited to help build and expand our already successful product range and help give more of these people a better quality of life.”

Alongside focusing refining existing ranges and focusing on new projects, Ben will also develop specifications, conduct product testing for strength and stability in line with medical device regulations ISO 13485 and IEC 60601 and engage with stakeholders at all levels, confirmed the company.

In addition to the up-and-coming mechanical design engineer joining the company, Benmor Medical has also boosted its rental technician team, with the recruitment of Tony Day as Rental Technician and Scott Casson as Maintenance Technician.

“The bariatric market is ever-changing, and adapting to the growth of this complex patient group requires us to expand our workforce with highly qualified individuals,” commented Peter Staddon, Managing Director of Benmor Medical.

“The ever-expanding market of bariatrics has required us to invest in the development of our workforce and bringing on Ben, Scott and Tony ensure our high level of service can continue to grow. Scott will bring a comprehensive maintenance service to our rental service in the North, with Tony providing additional rental expertise at our Head Office.

“Ben’s previous skills ensure he can bring new innovation and enhancement to our product range while providing design and engineering expertise to our in-house manufacturing process”.

In April 2019, Benmor Medical agreed an exclusive distribution partnership with Dutch-firm Tetcon to bring its bariatric emergency evacuation equipment to the UK, described as the only evacuation sheet for larger individuals that permanently sits under the bed mattress.
