Astor Bannerman has acquired the OpeMed brand and taken control of its UK operations, expanding the Group’s patient handling portfolio.

Cheltenham-based manufacturer and supplier Astor Bannerman was founded in 1993 when two friends from Oxfordshire were commissioned to create a height-adjustable kitchen table by Muscular Dystrophy UK.

Over its 27 years, the company has expanded its offering and now supplies a comprehensive range of equipment to support patient handling, bathing, washing and showering within Changing Places, home, care homes, hospitals, schools and universities.

The Gloucestershire firm now boasts several distinct brands, including its Astor Bannerman Care and Hygienic Handle arms. Now the organisation has added OpeMed to its portfolio.

Discussing the acquisition, Mark Colebrook, Managing Director of Astor Bannerman, commented: “OpeMed is a very strong ceiling hoist brand with a great reputation in homecare, long-term care and education sectors. The addition of OpeMed within our portfolio will certainly further strengthen Astor Bannerman’s presence and expertise within patient handling.”

Established in 2008, Surrey-based OpeMed is a supplier of transfer equipment, ceiling hoists, patient Hoists, slings and associated products for SEN, DFG, Changing Places, case management and specialist healthcare environments.

In 2018, OpeMed became a division of Dutch company United Care.

“We have worked closely with OpeMed for a number of years and look forward to developing our offering further and supporting the worldwide rollout of Changing Places now that OpeMed is an integral part of Astor Bannerman,” added Colebrook.

The two companies have worked closely over the past seven years to champion access to Changing Places facilities. In 2013, a joint venture between Astor-Bannerman and OpeMed created Aveso Ltd, a platform to sponsor the Changing Places campaign and lead on the installation of Changing Places facilities.
