AdaptistaDisabled-led Adaptista has launched a “first-of-its-kind” high-end e-commerce platform in the UK which features an array of carefully curated brands offering inclusive fashion, beauty and lifestyle products.

Shifting the narrative of what accessible and adaptive clothing should look like, Adaptista is looking to lead with the meaningful mission of celebrating what it sees as one of the largest, yet frequently underrepresented, minority groups. This platform represents a hub of quality, fashion-forward brands that drive inclusive practices within their industry, offering “innovative products” tailored to people with disabilities.

Featuring brands that offer solution-driven products to people with disabilities, Adaptista launched on July 13th, featuring a range of upscale fashion, beauty and lifestyle products for customers to explore.

The platform is bespoke built, allowing for agility in accessibility features that are currently tested and implemented by disabled and inclusive software development experts Glaze Digital, which are pursuant to the WCAG 2.1 AA standard.

Adaptista is partnering with ‘Recite Me’, a leading accessibility tool in the UK with features such as text to speech, speech recognition, page translation, magnification and text styling.

The e-commerce firm will also act as a disabled-led support network for customers and brands. Offering training and business development opportunities for the featured businesses, the platform aims to prioritise community care.

Founded by garment technologist and disability advocate Maria O’Sullivan-Abeyratne, Adaptista emerged from the need of finding truly adaptive solutions for a wide variety of people with disabilities. Maria was an international equestrian and a triathlete but was forced to retire due to an incurable illness. Since then, Maria had first-hand experience of how disability makes day-to-day life difficult including the buying and wearing of clothes.

This particularly resonated with Maria during her wedding, where she struggled with putting on her wedding dress. Maria commented: “After a lot of frustration and giggles, it hit me – there must be a better way.” Out of this experience, Adaptista was born.

According to Adaptista, while there is still is a tangible lack of elevated, disability-led e-commerce options, the adaptive clothing market is currently set to grow by US$121 billion by 2026. News of the new platform comes after mobility manufacturer Permobil announced that it was collaborating with a Swedish fashion brand that specialises in creating clothes for people using wheelchairs over a new initiative that celebrates diversity and inclusion.
