Acorn Stairlifts van
Newly-published results for Yorkshire-based Acorn Stairlifts show the business emerging strongly from the global Covid-19 pandemic and benefiting from strategies put in place to combat its effects.

The results for the year ended September 30th 2021, show the business’s annual turnover at £236.6 million, up by £6 million on the previous year. Profit after tax was £47.9 million, up by just over £13.2 million on the previous year.

Commenting on the latest results, Acorn’s Group Finance Director Joanne Richardson said: “This is a very positive set of results which shows that the steps we took to limit the impact of the global pandemic were effective.

“Those measures, combined with the dedication and flexibility of Acorn’s workforce, have helped us endure one of the most challenging periods in the company’s 30-year history and emerge from it well-placed for continued growth and progression.”

Two-thirds of Acorn’s turnover came from its activities outside the UK. All Acorn Stairlifts are manufactured in the UK, but exported for sale in Western Europe, North America and Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

As part of the medical and social care supply chain, Acorn continued to operate throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, to service and protect the ongoing needs of its customers.

Its engineers employ strict Covid protocols when carrying out essential stairlift maintenance and servicing in the homes of Acorn customers, most of whom are classed as vulnerable.

Sales of new stairlifts dipped, but have recovered well. In many cases, having a home stairlift in place enabled people with mobility issues to live independently and safely at home during lockdowns and while self-isolating or shielding.

When Covid-19 surfaced at the beginning of 2020, Acorn reacted quickly to implement a range of strategies designed to cushion its impact on the global business.

The latest figures reflect a full year of the success of those measures. As the company emerges from the pandemic, it is actively recruiting, with details of current UK opportunities available online.

Looking ahead, significant investment is continuing at Acorn’s manufacturing plants in West Yorkshire and Scotland, and at the company’s head offices in Steeton, West Yorkshire.

At the end of 2019, sustained growth saw Acorn buy a vacant three-storey office building next to its existing offices on Steeton’s Millennium Business Park.

That additional capacity proved invaluable in helping the business meet and exceed workplace social distancing guidelines during the pandemic.
