Acorn Stairlifts National Sales Manager cuts off hair for Marie Curie image

An Acorn Stairlifts national sales manager has raised more than £8,000 for Marie Curie by waving goodbye to her shoulder-length locks.

Caren Larkman-Ayre was cheered on by colleagues at Acorn’s West Yorkshire head offices as she went under the clippers in support of the national charity. She had already topped her ambitious £7,500 target, with more donations still coming in to her online JustGiving page.

Acorn Stairlifts has a longstanding charity partnership with Marie Curie, which provides care and support through terminal illness. Like most charities, its fundraising has been severely disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, prompting Caren to launch her bold head shave challenge.

Under its national partnership with Marie Curie, Acorn donates up to 60 free stairlifts per year so the charity’s patients can be cared for in their own homes.

In December, the supplier donated a free stairlift to an elderly couple under the partnership. It means that 95-year-old great-grandmother Joan King and her husband Ted can stay independent in their own home.

Discussing her decision to shave her head for Marie Curie, Caren said: “I was getting more and more nervous as the day approached, but now it’s done I’m pleasantly surprised with the result. Most of all I want to say a huge thank-you to everyone who’s made a donation. The total’s over £8,000 now and still growing, which is just amazing!”

Caren’s hairdresser Kelly Weston did the cut, first putting her hair in plaits which she snipped off before using her clippers for the rest. The plaits will be sent to Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides free real hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment.
