Accessible bungalows provide tailored housing to support families with additional needs

Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Gordon Lyons has been welcomed by Woven, one of Northern Ireland’s (NI) leading providers of social housing, to its new housing development at McKeen’s Avenue in Carrickfergus to view progress on the site.
Woven’s construction partner Maurice Flynn & Sons began development on the site this year and, once completed, it will encompass three purpose-built, accessible bungalows.
The two four-bedroom and one two-bedroom bungalows will include dedicated parking spaces, and are being delivered in partnership with the Housing Executive, to provide tailored housing to support families with additional needs.
Gordon Lyons MLA said: “I am pleased to see significant progress being made on these accessible bungalows being delivered by Woven in Carrickfergus. The homes are located in the heart of the community, close to the town centre and local amenities and will provide high-quality, energy efficient housing for those who need it most.”
While demand for social housing remains high across Northern Ireland with 49,083 on the waiting list, Woven is committed to sustained investment across the province, delivering high quality, affordable homes that make a difference in the local community.
Planning for Woven’s new development was approved by Mid & East Antrim Borough Council and it will be situated a short distance away from Carrickfergus high street, providing accessibility to a wide range of local amenities for the families.
This scheme takes Woven’s total investment in the area to over £3 million following the previous 24-unit development at Scotch Quarter, providing tailored housing to the over 55 community.
Neil McIvor, Board Chair for Woven, said: “We are delighted to have Gordon Lyons MLA visit our project site in Carrickfergus and welcome the opportunity to showcase the progress being made on these much-needed homes.
“By creating houses that meet the requirements of residents with additional needs, we are helping to ensure people can live independently and with dignity in their home.
“The development is part of Woven’s ongoing mission to deliver high-quality, affordable and accessible homes in Carrickfergus and across Northern Ireland. We are committed to developing housing that brings people together in thriving neighbourhoods and that meets the diverse housing needs.”
Woven currently has more than 2,700 homes, providing a range of housing solutions including supported, sheltered and general needs housing across Northern Ireland.
Christina McGill, Habinteg’s Director of Social Impact and External Affairs, says it was disappointing to read the New Towns Taskforce’s final report, which identifies specific locations for the towns and makes recommendations on how they might be designed and delivered.
